About us
Portales Dental has called Conroe home since 1997, as a privately owned, family-run practice built on the belief that honest dentistry and genuine warmth are not mutually exclusive. Dr. Charles Portales and his team have spent nearly three decades building something rare: a place where patients walk in for a cleaning and leave feeling like they just visited a friend.

Dr. Charles Portales, DDS
At 11 years old, Dr. Portales started working in his dad’s oral surgery office in the historic Nix Building in downtown San Antonio. Dentistry has been part of his life ever since.
After graduating from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 1997, he opened his first practice on Marbach Road off the Loop. In 2003, he married Deb, and the following year they planted roots in Conroe, Texas... back when 3083 wasn’t connected to I-45 and Highway 105 wasn’t yet a daily test of patience and character.
Dr. Portales is passionate about continuing education and lifelong learning. He enjoys the Spears Study Club, CEREC training courses, and his local study club, the North Houston Interdisciplinary Study Club. That’s just a fancy way of saying:
“Eats dinner while learning.”
Dr. Portales has been married to Deb for more than 20 years, and together they have three children:
Tim (18), Noah (17), and Lottie (16).
These days, life mostly revolves around:
- visiting Tim at Texas A&M and watching his tennis matches
- attending Noah’s golf tournaments
- keeping tabs on Lottie and her snowball stand empire
Doc can’t quite keep up with Tim on the tennis court anymore, but he loves a good round of golf with Noah.

When the kids temporarily stop being the center of the universe, Doc and Deb enjoy cruising together and pretending to be empty nesters for a few glorious days.

Your first visit
Here's what it looks like to walk through our door for the first time
When you call Portales Dental, a real person picks up the phone, most of the time it will be Stacey, Barb, Anna, or Deb. We hold open spots on the schedule because we always love meeting new patients, and we don't want you waiting weeks for a first appointment. When you arrive, you won't be sitting long. Dr. Portales runs on time because he respects yours.
Patient experience
Dr. Portales will sit down with you in the operatory, look you in the eye, and talk to you, not at you. He'll go over what he's seeing, explain your options clearly, give you his honest recommendation, and let you decide. He's not going to push you toward the most expensive option. He's going to tell you what he'd do if you were his family.
What to bring
To make your first visit as smooth as possible, please bring:
- A valid photo ID
- Your dental insurance card (if applicable)
- A list of any current medications
- Any dental X-rays from a previous provider (if available)
- Completed new patient forms (available online before your visit)

With CEREC CAD/CAM technology, Dr. Portales can design, mill, and place a permanent crown in a single appointment. No temporaries, no second visit, no waiting two weeks for a lab to call back.

Cone beam CT imaging gives Dr. Portales a three-dimensional view of your teeth, jaw, and bone structure. More information makes for better decisions and a clearer picture of your long-term dental health.
Digital X-rays
Fast, low-radiation digital X-rays that can be reviewed chairside in real time, so Dr. Portales can walk you through exactly what he's seeing.
Philips Zoom whitening
Complimentary for patients, because Dr. and Mrs. Portales believe taking care of their people includes a brighter smile.

Portales Dental has been woven into the fabric of Conroe for nearly 30 years. From sponsoring local little league teams to advertising in high school theater playbills to supporting the Golden Needles Quilting Guild, Dr. Portales and his family show up for this community the way they show up for their patients: with their whole heart. And right next door, you'll find Lottie's Shivers Shaved Ice, run by the Portales family's daughter Lottie. She's been at it for 11 seasons, her line wraps around the block all summer, and her dad has been known to share his parking lot, not always enthusiastically, but always proudly.
