A dentist who grew up loving dentistry

Dr. Charles Portales didn't choose dentistry on a whim. He started working for his father, an oral surgeon, at age 11, cleaning instruments, taking X-rays, and eventually assisting on procedures. By his teenage years, he was showing up for emergency calls and getting a front-row view of complex cases that most dentists never see. He earned his DDS from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, spent two years associating, and in 1997 opened his own practice in Conroe, Texas. He's been here ever since; 29 years in the same building, seeing patients he's known for decades, and loving every bit of it. He's a longtime member of the Spears Study Club and the Texas Dental Association, and his patients still talk about his injections. They can't feel them.

A team that actually likes each other

The Portales Dental team is eight people who genuinely enjoy coming to work. There are no production contests, no infighting, no pressure to compete. Dr. Portales and Deb built the culture the same way they built the building: on purpose, and with people in mind. The lobby looks like a dining room. There's a coffee bar. The staff decorate their own spaces. Patients come in tense and leave surprised: "It doesn't feel, look, or smell like a dental office." That's exactly the point.
